Canterbury Design

The Canterbury School of Fort Myers, FL was awarded a $75,000 grant from Steelcase, the leader in educational commercial furniture. Office Furniture and Design Concepts (OFDC), the local Steelcase dealer in the area brought the grant opportunity to the school and once they were accepted for the grant, OFDC gave and additional $25,000 to the project.

A team from OFDC as well as Canterbury got together to transform a computer lab in the Middle School which was later coined “The Cougar Den” for the Canterbury Cougars as well as an Upper School, classroom in the High School. OFDC’s team consisted of Ashley Chaffee, Lead Account Executive and Mary Beth Campbell, Director of Design.

Canterbury wanted to totally transform the area and with the funding from both Steelcase and OFDC, they were able to create the first 21st century learning environment in South West Florida. As well as make it a fun space for the kids to learn.

The design process started with forming how teaching was to be done with the space, what the teachers wanted it to facilitate as well as how to make it a multifunctioning area where student could work together or separately. Once that outline was set, Mary Beth put together a 2D space plan that showed where the furniture was to be placed and how it was to fit into the functionality of the space. From there, we picked the flooring, fabrics and paint. Once those selections were made, we sent off the space to get graphically rendered. The team wanted it to be totally different than any other space in the school and they succeeded. The catch with everything is that they wanted it to be a total surprise to the students. OFDC’s team had two days to totally transform the space.

OFDC’s flooring division came in on a Friday morning and ripped up the existing carpet, prepped the floors and laid down the new flooring. Friday afternoon, the furniture was delivered and “staged” for installation on Saturday. On Saturday OFDC’s installation team came and installed the furniture. Entech, installed all the IT equipment and programed the Steelcase technology into the school’s network. By Saturday at 6:00, they were finished for the teacher’s open house on Sunday afternoon. It was a great experience and the best part was seeing the expressions of the kid’s faces on Monday morning.
